Traumatic events in our past are like sunken ships on the ocean floor. They lie half-buried and forgotten until the current or sea life causes them to shimmy and shudder and release pockets of ancient, foul, stagnant air, which slowly bubble to the surface and burst. The trick is to remember that these are just echoes of the past. They are awful but the real damage was done when the ship was sunk; everything else is just memories.
